Pulau Redang, located 45km off the coast of Kualau Terengganu, is the largest of a group of nine protected islands dotting the South China Sea off the Terengganu coast. The island offers crystal clear waters and numerous dive sites for enthusiasts. Sheltered within the Pulau Redang Marine Park, the waters here are rich in marine life. At midday when sun rays penetrate the sea, brillian hues of coral, anemones and fish can be seen.

The waters around Pulau Redang also contain two historic shipwrecks: The H.M.S Prince of Wales and H.M.S Repulse, which sank here at the start of World War II, setting the stage for the Japanese occupation of Malaya. This paradise island is perfect for snorkelling, swimming, scuba-diving, jungle trekking, boating and canoeing. No fishing is allowed within a 3.2km radius of the island as Pulau Redang is gazetted as a marine park. The collection of corals and other aquatic ife is also strictly prohibited. Cathay Pacific report Traffic Figures for December 2008

Cathay Pacific's and Dragonair's combined traffic figures for December 2008 show a slight decrease in the number of passengers carried compared to the same month in 2007, despite a capacity in cargo and mail tonnage.

In December 2008, the two airlines carried a total of 2,110,719 passengers - down 0.3% over the same month in 2007 - while the load factor dipped by 1.8 percentage points to 79%. This compares to a 4.7% rise in passenger capacity, measured in available seat kilometres (ASKs), for the month. For 2008 as a whole, the number of passengers carried was 24,959,429 - 7.3% rise, compared to a capacity increase of 12.7%.

Cathay Pacific and Dragonair carried a total of 115,232 tonnes of cargo and mail last month, down 23.9% on December 2007, while capacity, measured in available cargo/mail tonne kilometres, fell by 14%. The cargo and mail load factor dropped by 5.7 percentage points to 62.9%. For the year as a whole, cargo and mail tonnage fell to 1.644.785 tonnes - down 1.6% compared to a capacity rise of 0.7%.

Cathay Pacific General Manager Revenue Management Tom Owen said, "Our passenger traffic in December fell marginally compared to the previous year, while capacity over the same period grew. The actual passenger numbers in December, while appearing reasonable in the current weak trading environment, were due to active measures in various markets to stimulate volumes, assisted by the short Christmas leisure peak. Chasing the available Economy cabin demand however, coupled with the continued slump in premium traffic and weak Hong Kong route demand, led to lower yields per ticket - and we expect a similar situation for Chinese New Year. Meanwhile, the premium cabin performance continues to grind downwards."

Cathay Pacific General Manager Cargo Sales & Marketing Titus Diu added, "There was no sign of any pre-Christmas rush in 2008 and weak demand globally led to tonnage failling faster than we could cut capacity. We saw a big decline in goods being carried from the Pearl and Yangtze River Deltas last months, causing a further slump in the Hong Kong market. We expect the market to remain weak in the first quarter of 2009 and we have revised our capacity to Europe and North America downwards in line with expected demand".

Asia Miles partners WORLDHOTELS

Asia Miles members can now earn a minimum of 500 miles for every stay with any WORLDHOTEL's affiliate hotel.

Cathay Pacific recently became the 8th airline partner of WORLDHOTELS in Asia Pacific, joining ANA, Asiana, Air China, Thai Airways, Malaysian Airlines, Qantas Airways and Jet Airways. WORLHOTELS now has 20 airline partners worldwide.

Roland Jegge, WORLDHOTELS' Vice President Asia Pacific, said, "This [partnership brings significant benefits to both affiliate hotels and guests alike. Savvy travellers often select accommodation according to which frequent flyer programme the hotel partners with, and our affiliate hotels can now strongly compete with global hotel chains on frequent flyer offerings."

To qualify for the miles bonus and any promotional benefits, guests simpls need to present their Asia Miles membership card at check-in, and the mileage account is automatically credited.

To commemorate this special occasion, customers in all three classes on the millionth customer flight will be also be presented with champagne onboard and special Singapore Airlines giveaways.

Singapore Prime Minister warns of difficult 2009

Submitted by Mohit Joshi on Thu, 01/01/09 - 02:44.

Singapore - Singapore's open economy cannot avoid being hit by the global economic recession and will face difficult prospects this year, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong warned in his New Year's message delivered Wednesday night.

he global economic recession, the most serious in 60 years, would be followed not by a quick rebound, but by several more years of slow growth, Lee cautioned. He said he expected the first half of this year to be difficult for Singapore with more companies downsizing, resulting in job losses.

The Singapore government has responded promptly to this economic storm with the key focus on jobs, Lee said, assuring that his government's next major focus would be this year's state budget with emphasis on job protection.

Lee has also cautioned that the budget, to be announced January 22, would not restore the Singapore economy to high growth overnight, but it would have measures to moderate the global economic recession's impact on the people and the economy.

Singapore registered 1.5 per cent economic growth, which was below the widely projected 2.5 per cent growth, Channel News Asia reported Thursday.
